Pseudopod 023: Civilized Monsters

“You see that?” Randolph asked, referring to the dingy shard of bone within the bag. “Recognize it?”

Before Kyle could answer, a thump sounded through the ceiling.

Randolph looked up but kept the gun aimed at Kyle’s face. “Hanna? Is that you? It’s ten o’clock, I figured you’d be asleep by now. Why don’t you come downstairs–?”

“Hanna stay up there!” Kyle shouted. “Randolph’s down here with a gun and he’s lost his mind.?”

A second later, the red light on the base of the kitchen phone blinked.

“You’re going to call the police?” Randolph asked Hanna. “Go right ahead. I’m sure they’d be as interested as I am to know where you’re keeping the bodies.”

Well, I think it would be hard for someone to claim that this story isn’t horror. It clearly has that gag factor and the gross out factor about it.

I always love a good story about a cannibal. I hear that there will shortly be a new Hannibal Lector movie, kind of the roots of Hannibal Lector or something like this.

Do you do movie reviews much the same way that Escape Pod does?

(gag) Oh I am totally (gag) sick now. Great (gag) story! i really (gag) liked it! Wow!

i had to sit still in silence for a few minutes after that one to let it ‘digest’ That really had my mind spinning.

eeeeeekkkk —– I can’t believe he watched someone slicing his leg and wanted a taste!!! Speechless —-

I’m sick and scared now. I want my mommy…

yes, big heaping helping of horror. so elves make fantasy, rockets make SciFi… blood and gore doesnt make horror though does it, though a slasher film might be considered it… thinking this over [having gone and questioned the ‘horror’ness of the previous ‘Them Eyes’ story] i think it has more t do with a particular sensation… go someplace one doesnt usually spend a lot of time, preferably at the bottom of some stairs.. and turn all the lights .. give it a lil time.. and imagine something reaching out from the dark, something clutching that shouldnt be there but you know is, wait for it to happen… thats horror.. horror is the waiting…. folowed by lots of screaming perhaps, but thats just to releave the stress.

That was fabulous! I, too, like a good story about savagery that springs up in the middle of a “civilized” society. And I do think this is bona fide horror. There was a buildup and a definite payoff that had much more to do with the darkness within than the blood on the surface.

Also- I’m very glad I don’t have a basement.

If the “Horror” dial for this one wasn’t set on “11” … then it was pretty darn near close.

Oh, and might I add “ick”.

I shuddered when I heard the part about his leg being cut. And that part about the chained man’s description was hard to get through as well. I’m so hooked on that repulsed feeling, and I know you don’t just need blood and gore to get to it.

Well done, if a little short. I wanted to hear more about how Kyle’s head regenerated.

Great story! Just what I needed to keep me alert on a snowy drive home in upstate NY.

Good story as far as horror goes, but I made the poor decision to listen to this without reading the description while trying to eat. That didn’t work out so well.

Just in case anybody cares, I do not care if I like or love every each and every story. Hell no. Even an okay trip is better than none.

I like most.

Okay file on this is no good.

I was surprised that it kept going after his forst hunger thought. The pause kinda tricked me, but I think it was a good ending. That would suck having to sit there and feel that. My sympathy.
