If her sisters came and got him, would it be an orgy or gang-rape? I'm not quite sure either way, if he died, his body would most likely die happy.

Yeah, necroposting, but I'm a recent Pseudopod convert and finally listened to the story.

All I have to say is that they missed a great gag:
Mara (As Jessica Rabbit): "So, is there anything special you want?"

"Patticake!!"

I think this is the first time that lead character was not true to the story; meaning no Aussie accent and not read by a male. Not that she did a bad job. It was more than fine.

After the story went on I can see why a woman read the story.

It was a nice variation on the succubus theme.

I just typed a long comment (and just emailed your url to lots of my friends and family) accidentally hit a button on this damned laptop and deleted every word! Shit! Shit!Shit! I have yet to figure out which key it is that keeps wiping my screen clean and it's not the delete key!

I am learning to multi-task by listening to your wonderful stories while writing code on one page, learning code in my studies with phoenix university, answering emails and the phone. The only bad thing is I missed the end often and have to zip the story back a few centimeters. I must learn to multi-task better! Thanks!

Did I love Leann's reading? No.

Did I lust Leann's reading? Damn skippy.

I'm not a big fan of horror. But I am a huge fan of stories -- any story -- where there is a massive right-angle turn at the end. That's what I love most about EscapePod and, quite frankly, have found the least appealing about (checking the spelling) Pseudopod.

But that was then. This is now. Great story. Great reading. Keep 'em coming!

Eric, What was the point of the town history? It only explained where Mara came from, that's all. Kind of very important back story to here character...

I thought this story was excellent. I was a little annoyed by some of the editing of the reading in the beginning, but it smoothed out as time passed. But overall, great reading, great story.

Though I liked the story because of its departure from a more classical vein of horror, I found myself getting annoyed by Roy (by the end, I thought if I heard him say one more "What?!" as a reply to another character, I would scream). It also felt like the story had too much irrelevant filler (what was the point of the town's history, as conveyed by Roy's co-worker?).

Overall, though, I'd again have to say that this story's deviation from traditional horror, mixed with an imaginative take on an ancient mythical creature, made for an engaging--if somewhat clumsy--experience.

Enjoyed it a lot, and thought it was a rare story to end with a 'happy ending' until I read what ComputerKing had to say (damn yoooooou!)

I enjoyed Leann's reading as well. Please get her back for more!

I'm not so sure he was the hero. I would prefer a world with more Maras than Roys...obviously ;-).

I thought her reading of Mara was great, but Roy lacked emotion. He didn't seem very shaken up by anything. Mur's bright reading of the outro hurt the creepy vibe I had going on, too. Though how much responsiblity does she have once the story is done?

I loved this story! It was a classic "slow burn" story, building up and ending with as happy an ending as we get around here. As an aside, I'm not a proponent of "happily ever after" stories in horror, but it is nice to see one where the hero survives, if scarred from the experience.

Outside of that, the reading was wonderful, too. I have to wonder if the staking was Roy's deepest desire or not. Mara (sp?) said he was ready, but...there's a lot left open, and a lot up for discussion.

Thank you Mur and Ben!

Warning:
Listen to pseudopod BEFORE you listen to it with your girlfriend.
Aside from that it's a great story, and Leann had the perfect voice.

ComputerKing, it didn't sound like he was out of desire, but completely terrified of it. He still had the temptation, but would run away when he got too close. He was probably one more "meeting" from his deepest desire, but sane enough to know that it was too sick to bring to life.
Going on that, it's kinda fun to think of what his deepest desire is.

The reading was fantastic. And the ending was pretty good - I like the idea of someone becoming a hunter. Even if he gets some sort of creepy sexual pleasure out of it.

Wow! This story totally caught me off guard. I'm thrown off balance now!

This is the best, and the narrator was PERFECT for this story. I loved the way she read, her voice and expresscions were again, perfect

This is one of my two favorites so far. Makes me wonder what really is on the minds of some of the men I've dated. LOL

I totally did NOT expect the ending...

Thanks so much for this story!

Of course, the question now is: Is Mara dead and gone?

I think not.

She mentioned that some men had fantasies of violence, and that when they went to the final level, they could possibly burn out, leaving them with no desire.

I have a few clues that she still exists:

First, when he was staking and beheading her, he mentioned that he never wanted to "enact that fantasy again".

Second, Mara said that mere flesh wasn't good enough for him, and that he was close to his deepest desire.

Third, she said that the deepest desire was often something deeply suppressed from far in the past, sometimes tied to the first sexual urge. Note the goth babysitter letting him watch horror movies and fucking her boyfriend on his parents' waterbed.

Finally, The description of his life after the Staking sounded a lot like he had burnt out, leaving him with no more desire.

So, Mara is out there, and all her sisters.
